Ladder 49

(Joe D'Urso)
Written early one morning while changing diapers for my son. I've learned over the years that inspiration doesn't pay attention to mundane chores. Luckily my wife took over and I was able to write these words in about three minutes. I always feel quite lucky when that happens and appreciate the breeze that blew it by. We're still hoping this shows up in a film of the same name but even if it doesn't, I feel rewarded by various firemen who have heard it and had kind words towards it.

I go to work each and every day
Asking nothing more than my pay
Took an oath, I hold in my heart
It's from there that everyday must start

I learned this job like my father
And my brothers that came before me
Thoughts of honor lead me on
Through the smoke, I can't see

If only I could only find the cry ringing in my ears
If I could only see through darkness
And these burning tears
A cry echoing through my mind
I would bring her down to Ladder 49

Down to safety, to her lover
To my brothers on the ground of Ladder 49

Tonight I will toast your health, your love and all your dreams
Tonight we dance a fairytale on clouds between moonbeams
So Lord hear this cry

Bring us down to safety, to our lovers
To my brothers on the ground of Ladder 49

Tonight I lay dreaming in bed
Taste the smoke, in my lungs, my head
Replay each step, every move I made
Another job done, another life saved

Down to safety, to our lovers
To my brothers on the ground of Ladder 49
I go to work each and every day
Asking nothing more than my pay
