Made My Mark

(Joe D'Urso)
This song is for Mark McGarril who was known to many as Asbury Mark. He was a good man who had problems for many years with drugs and the bottle but rose above it and finished strong. Way strong. He helped many people turn their lives around and won't be forgotten for a long time. I don't think Mark ever missed a show I performed along the Jersey Shore, big or small, he was always there. I miss him every time I perform and I don't see him standing there in his Disciples of Soul leather jacket. One of the coolest leathers I've ever seen. He was the fiancé of a friend of mine and I now realize this song is a testament to her and her strength as much as his. The old adage about how there is always a good woman behind every good man was never more true here as she led him to a place that he may have always been looking for. After he died there was a benefit concert at The Stone Pony in his remembrance called "Make Your Mark". He certainly did.

There was never enough love in my town
Everybody 'round there always put me down
But I knew I get out of there
I knew one day I would start
And find a place to make my mark

When you found me I was walking around
And walking is being kind cause mostly I was falling down
But you took me by the hand
Showed me how to be a man
And led me to the place where I make my mark

Down in the Park, made my mark
Started with a spark, made my mark
Light behind the dark, made my mark
We stood together and we made my mark

There's so many things I'd love to say
But you being you, you know just want they are anyway
You took me by the hand
Showed me how to be a man
Showed me light behind the dark
You knew one day I would start
And find a place to make my mark

Down in the Park, made my mark
Started with a spark, made my mark
Light behind the dark, made my mark
We stood together and we made our mark
